Clarification on MDA

My previous post brought some confusion over my views of agile development and Model-driven architecture.

When I said “MDA is the wave of the future” I was speaking as if I were James McGovern, trying to be a thought leader.

John Brothers, the author of Indefinite Articles, does not believe MDA is the wave of the future, in my opinion, MDA is just another CASE for F500 organizations to throw money into.  But this is not a terribly informed opinion, so don’t take me as a thought leader on MDA. :)

  1. From what I can tell, he mentioned that several in the agile community such as Jon Kern are behind MDA and that they are being inconsistent. I think you read into something not said.

  2. James said:

One of the original members of the agile community that I have tons of respect for is Jon Kern. You may have noticed that he doesn’t talk much about writing code but focuses in on generating code and is a big advocate of Model Driven Architectures. The future state says that coding will be for the lame and that code won’t matter but I guess the agile community didn’t get Jon’s memo.

So specifically breaking it down, he said:
    * Jon Kern is a member of the agile community.
    * Jon Kern is an advocate for MDA
    * In the future, it will be lame to be a coder

    Agree so far?

Now, the last part is the kicker - “I guess the agile community didn’t get Jon’s memo.”

In other words, the agile community (his words, not mine) is encouraging lameness by advocating for things like Ruby, instead of things like MDA.

  3. Hmmm, you wrote as if you were me and got blasted, but it is impossible that I may have done the same of others?

The agile community can and should advocate whatever brings the most business value.

Would love to know your thoughts on what the agile community could do in order to get the attention it deserves. Could you make this your next blog entry?
